The shapes of things to come

Toronto Star

It's the big international architectural firms that get all the attention, but often it's the smaller local outfits that deserve it. None more so than Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg, the Toronto architectural practice that has made a huge contribution to the evolving landscape of this city. Flexible, innovative but practical and supremely urban, KPMB has designed art galleries and concert halls as well as condos and office towers. Formed in 1987, the firm grew out of the remnants of Barton Myers' office. When Myers opted to leave Toronto for the sunnier climes of Los Angeles, four of his leading designers, Bruce Kuwabara, Tom Payne, Marianne McKenna and Shirley Blumberg decided to stay here and pick up where he left off.
